2011 Winner: Karen Brown from
Orpington, Kent
Karen has completed an
advanced IT course at the Cotmandene Resource Centre in St Mary’s
Cray, Kent. She become a volunteer at the centre and identified a
gap in the training provision and started to run a weekly community
IT workshop, while the centre waited on funding.
Karen’s courses have proved popular
thanks to her informal way of teaching and tailoring training. The
IT classes help many low income and socially isolated people learn
how to use computers and access services, shop online or job
search.
Karen has gone on to gain further
IT qualifications and is working towards a long-term goal of
employment within the adult education sector.
