New £180K games area officially opens in Leeds

A new £180,000 sports and play park has opened in the Killingbeck area of Leeds.

The multi-use games area has been built on the site of an old tennis court  on the Killingbeck Estate, in Leeds.

It includes facilities for  football, cricket, tennis and basketball and is fully fenced.

It also features a toddler play area equipped with a climbing frame and other play equipment chosen by residents as well as a landscaped green space for the whole community to enjoy.

National affordable housing provider, Affinity Sutton, which has more than 600 homes in Leeds, has invested more than £80,000 in the project – which aims to really improve the quality of community life in Killingbeck.

The project was funded as part of a partnership between the Killingbeck Tenants Group,  Affinity Sutton, Leeds City Council, Groundwork Leeds, Jimbo’s Fund, and Britvic. It also received nearly £50,000 from the Big Lottery’s Community Spaces fund.

Matthew Parsonage, Head of Neighbourhood Investment for affordable housing provider Affinity Sutton, said:  “As a business for social purpose we are committed to creating opportunities for our communities to thrive and think that the multi use games area will be a fantastic resource for the whole community.  We really hope that people of all ages enjoy using it.”

Mary Miller, Chair of the Killingbeck Tenants Group, said: “We are delighted that the games area is about to open after months of hard work.  We think it will be a fantastic facility for the whole community and just shows what can be achieved when people work together.”

Councillor Graham Hyde, chair of the outer east area committee said:  “It is fantastic to see this new multi use games area completed.  The area committee wanted to help fund this project as part of improving the quality of community life in Killingbeck. The old tennis court was looking tired, but this new games area will be a great new resource for the community.”

Mary Miller, Chair of the Killingbeck Tenants Group, added: “We are very grateful to everyone who has been involved with this project for all their hard work.  We are really looking forward to having this fantastic new facility in our community.”
