Photography tips

Take photos like the pros!

Here are a few top tips to help you on your way to taking that perfect shot...

Be quick

If it is at all possible that your subject may move, bolt, fly away, stop smiling, or just get tired of waiting for you to take the picture, shoot once right away.

Check what light you’re working with

Which way are the shadows falling? Unless you want a silhouette effect, it's generally best to shoot with the sun behind you.

Watch the weather

If it's overcast, simply keep the sky out of your pictures as much as possible. This is usually the best way to avoid both muted tones in your subject and washed-out skies in your background. You might also find black and white pictures of an overcast day more pleasing than color.

When the day is beautiful, go ahead and make the most of it.

Keep your camera with you

Sometimes the best photo opportunities come when you least expect it. If you can take your camera out and about regularly – you might be able to take advantage of some of those unexpected opportunities.

Practice makes perfect!

Try to photograph something every day. If you can’t do that, make sure you take time to practice regularly, so you don’t forget what you’ve learned.

Photographing people…

Fill the camera's viewfinder or LCD display with your subject to create pictures with greater impact. Step in close or use your camera's zoom to emphasize what is important and exclude the rest.

No need to pose – unposed pictures of people usually appear more natural and relaxed than posed pictures.

Don’t shoot down on flowers…

Taking a picture of flowers from above will make them look very average – shoot them from an angle we don’t see them from everyday.
