Electrics in your home
Electrics in your home
If you’re planning to carry out any
electrical repairs or improvements to your home, you must always
get permission from us before you do so.
The Building Regulations (Part P) now prohibit
most DIY electrical work within the home unless it’s carried out by
a qualified ‘competent person’.
Even experienced electricians must either be
‘Part P certified’ or they’ll need to submit a Building Notice to
the local authority to have their work inspected.
Anyone who fails to carry out works on
domestic electrical installations in accordance with the Building
Regulations might:
- Potentially put their health and safety and that of others at
risk.
- Be liable for a fine (the local authority can impose fines of
up to £5000 and enforcement orders for non-compliance at £50 per
day until corrected).
- Possibly invalidate the home insurance.
- Encounter problems with any future sale of the property.
