Fire risks
Fire risks
In October 2006, the government introduced new laws that
require most buildings (apart from domestic dwellings) to undergo a
fire risk assessment. This means all communal areas in our blocks
of flats and our offices need to be formally
inspected.
Our fire and building surveyors ensure our
buildings are safe and they inspect our buildings on an annual
basis. They also liaise with the Fire Brigade.
They don’t need access to your home and you
don’t need to do anything – we just wanted to let you know what’s
going on.
You can help reduce the risk of fires
in communal areas by:
- Keeping all your belongings in your home. Don’t leave
things in the corridors that can burn, or get in someone’s
way.
- Don’t keep any fuel or other flammable products in the
building.
- When going to bed at night, close all internal
doors.
- Don’t change your front door without checking with us
first. All doors to flats must be fire doors. If you change the
door, you may affect your own safety and that of
others.
- Ensure there’s always a good means of escape. Don’t block
the corridors with rubbish or belongings. Don’t install locks on
exit doors.
To help avoid arson attacks, don’t leave the
doors open and don’t let people into the building unless you know
them or see identification.
