Supermarket helps deliver new homes for
Plymouth
Supermarket chain Lidl has teamed up with
national affordable housing provider Affinity Sutton to build new
affordable homes in the heart of Plymouth.
Thirteen new apartments have been built above
the new landmark Lidl store, on Union Street – which will also
provide a retail facility and employment opportunities for local
people.
The development, on the site of a former car
showroom, will provide:
- 12 two bedroom apartments
- One three bedroom apartment
- The apartments are arranged over two floors, each with a large
south facing balcony accessed from the living room.
The scheme has been built thanks to a
partnership between national affordable housing provider Affinity
Sutton, which manages 1500 homes in the city, Plymouth City Council
and the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency – who provided
£570,000 in funding towards the scheme.
Built as part of Plymouth City Council’s
Market Recovery Action Plan, it is Affinity Sutton’s first
new build development in the City of Plymouth for nine years and
marks the start of Affinity Sutton’s new four year building
programme for Plymouth.
Lewin Dumper, Head of Housing for Affinity
Sutton, said: “We are delighted to have worked with Lidl and
Plymouth City Council to deliver these much needed affordable new
homes in the heart of the city. As a business for social
purpose we are committed to building well designed affordable new
homes and this new landmark building will deliver affordable
housing for families as well as a retail facility.”
Cabinet Member for Planning, Strategic Housing
and Economic Development, Councillor Ted Fry said: “Working with
our partners we must ensure that the housing supply continues to
promote growth and prosperity in the city. We have all agreed four
citywide priorities: delivering growth, raising aspirations,
reducing inequality and providing value for our communities and
housing has a role to play in all of them.”
James Mitchell, Development Executive for Lidl
said: We at Lidl are delighted to have been able to deliver this
valuable mixed use scheme working in partnership with both Affinity
Sutton and Plymouth City Council. The finished product is the
result of much work by all parties involved and is something we can
all be proud of. We are pleased to have created new jobs for local
people and look forward to providing the local community with great
value, high quality produce in the future'.
